Iyengar inspired Yoga

Yoga inspired by the teachings of BKS Iyengar, one of the most influential modern Yoga icons, whom made ancient Indian Yoga practices accessible to our western bodies. This style of Yoga is still taught in its pure form in Pune, India and is based on principles of accurate alignment and support through the use of props to enhance optimal flow of physical and mental energy. Like Ashtanga Yoga (see below), Iyengar Yoga also has its roots in the teachings of Krishnamacharya and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.

Ashtanga Yoga

Yoga as traditionally taught by Guru Krishnamacharya and further popularized in the west by Sri K Patthabi Jois. Ashtanga Yoga is still taught in its pure form in Mysore, India and is based on a disciplined cultivation of meditative self practice, through which the student is progressively taught a set sequence of postures that increase in level of difficulty. It is the original foundation of Vinyasa, through which body postures (Asana) are synchronized with the flow of breath (Ujjayi), while gently guided by looking points (Drishti) and powered by internal energy valves (Bandha). Ashta (eight) & Anga (limb) means 8 Limbed Path and the teachings of this Yoga style follows the guidance of Sage Patanjali as prescribed in the Yoga Sutras around 250BC. The eight practical steps are Yama (ethical disciplines), Niyama (self observances), Asana (yoga postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (one pointed concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (self realization).

Vinyasa Yoga

Yoga in its most modern form, dynamic and diverse in nature and continually evolving through the inner explorations and outer discoveries of Yoga teachers from around the globe. “Vinyasa” is derived from the Sanskrit term “nyasa”, which means “to place” and the prefix “vi”, which means “in a special way”. We see Vinyasa in nature all around us, as day flows into night, night flows into day, following the cycle of the sun and the moon, the transition of the seasons, the rise and fall of the ocean tides and the flow of our breath from inhalation to exhalation, through a sacred pause, then flowing back from exhalation to inhalation. So too the practice of Vinyasa Yoga is based on the traditional principles of Ashtanga Yoga that sacredly link the movement of body with the flow of breath, directing energy through subtle lines (Nadis) and subtle energy centers (Chakras) in our body, linking one posture to the next and threading one theme into another mindfully, with pure intention. Vinyasa Yoga innovator, Shiva Rea, explains that Vinyasa in its original meaning from the early Tantras is understood as the sequence of consciousness or how life unfolds from Spanda (the creative pulse of life) in a spontaneous (Sahaja) way. The intention of Vinyasa is to realise and embody the sacred current within, to surf the waves of life force from its primordial vibration as pure consciousness.

Yin Yoga

Yoga in its most passive form, based on Acupuncture meridians, this style of Yoga is focused on stretching and strengthening the connective tissues of the body, rather than just the muscles. Postures are held for long periods of time to allow fascia, ligaments, tendons and bones to respond, opening and expanding energy flow throughout the entire mind-body system and especially enhancing the function of ones organs.

Restorative Yoga

Yoga similar to Yin Yoga where postures are held passively for a long period of time, but focused more fully on restoring physical and mental energy, allowing the body to rest and relax completely, passively opening, with the support of props. This style of Yoga originates from the teachings of BKS Iyengar and is often therapeutically prescribed for persons under intense stress or to those suffering from physical ailments.
